Small claims court is also a realistic path for smaller deposit amounts — no lawyer required, a real hearing, and a judge who looks at the actual contract and payment record rather than taking anyone's word for it.

A slow contractor is often just island life. A vanished one, with your money, is a legal situation with real paths forward, not something to just write off.
